Every diamond matters. Every diamond means something to the person who owns it. But let me tell you something the industry would prefer you didn't know: not all diamonds are created equal, and "perfect" is a myth designed to sell you something more expensive than what you actually need.

The 4 C's in Plain English

Cut Cut is the most important C and the one most buyers ignore. Cut is not the shape (round, princess, emerald). Cut is the quality of the faceting: how well the diamond returns light. A poorly cut D-flawless stone will look dead. A well-cut H-SI1 will look alive. Always prioritize cut.

Color Graded D (colorless) through Z (light yellow). For most stones, the difference between D and G is invisible to the naked eye. Save the money. Spend it on cut.

Clarity Graded FL (flawless) through I3 (heavily included). VS2 and SI1 are usually "eye clean," so you can't see inclusions without magnification. Anything cleaner is paying for what a microscope sees, not your eyes.

Carat Weight, not size. Two one-carat diamonds can look completely different depending on their cut. Don't buy a number. Buy a stone.

What I Tell Every Client

Ask for the GIA certificate. Not IGI, not EGL, not in-house. GIA. If they don't have one, walk. Ask to see the diamond loose, under a 10x loupe, on a white card. Take your time. A real jeweler will never rush you. The pressure is the tell.

Know what you're buying. That's the only rule that matters.
