Tonight was bigger than basketball.
On the day the Reebok x Barbie Angel Reese 1 officially released, I had the honor of hand delivering a one of one custom pair to Angel Reese before Barbie Game Day against the Las Vegas Aces. Every Austrian crystal was individually hand set into the aqua recessed panels to enhance the original design without changing it.
This project was personal.
My mother Rebecca Diggs is 77 years old, born in 1949, and she was a basketball player during a time when women rarely received the recognition they deserved.
I am 46, born in 1979, and when I was in high school, I dreamed of playing in the NBA. That dream simply was not possible for girls.
Now my daughter, Laila Diaz Diggs (@lilgumbodiggs), is 17, born in 2009, and is beginning her senior year while chasing that same dream.
Three generations. Three basketball players.
Angel Reese represents something bigger than basketball to our family. She represents possibility. She represents progress. She represents hope.
Angel, thank you for inspiring girls like my daughter and making all three generations of my family proud. Congratulations on your Barbie Signature Doll, your Reebok collaboration, and everything you''re accomplishing. The future is brighter because of women like you.
